Do you already have a practical driving test booked but haven’t previously taken lessons with J9 Driving?

The Driving Standards Check is designed for experienced drivers who need their driving assessed and polished to meet current UK test standards. We will identify any habits, weaknesses or skills that require improvement and focus your lessons on the areas where they will benefit you most.

  • At least four two-hour lessons are required.
  • The minimum total cost is £320.
  • At least four weeks’ notice before your test is required.
  • Existing J9 Driving pupils receive priority.
  • Further lessons may be required if your driving is not yet at test standard.
Using the J9 car for your test

Completing these lessons does not guarantee that you will be ready for your test or able to use the J9 Driving car on test day. The car may only be used when you have demonstrated that you can drive independently and safely.

Payment and booking

Lessons may be paid for in advance or in cash at the start of each lesson. Payment must be received before the lesson begins. If payment has not been made, the lesson will not go ahead.

The standard 48-hour cancellation policy applies. Online booking is not currently available, so please contact J9 Driving directly to discuss your test date, driving experience and lesson availability.

Helpful information

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before beginning your lessons with J9 Driving.

How much are driving lessons?

A two-hour lesson costs £80. A ten-hour block costs £380 and includes five two-hour lessons paid for in advance.

Do you teach in a manual or automatic car?

J9 Driving provides lessons in a modern, fully insured and maintained manual car.

Which areas do you cover?

Lessons are available across Over Wyre, Lancaster and Morecambe, subject to availability.

Do you teach anxious or neurodivergent pupils?

Yes. J9 Driving specialises in calm, patient and individual tuition for anxious learners and people with ADHD, autism and other neurodivergent needs.

How can I pay for my lessons?

Lessons may be paid for in advance or in cash at the start of the lesson. Payment must be received before the lesson begins. If payment has not been made, the lesson will not go ahead.

What is your cancellation policy?

At least 48 hours’ notice is required when cancelling or rearranging a standard lesson. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged in full.

Can I use the J9 Driving car for my practical test?

Only if you have demonstrated that you can drive independently and safely to the required test standard. Booking lessons does not guarantee use of the J9 Driving car on test day.

What if I already have a practical driving test booked?

If you have not previously learned with J9 Driving, you will need to book a Driving Standards Check. At least four two-hour lessons are required, and you must provide at least four weeks’ notice before your test. Existing J9 Driving pupils receive priority.

Do you offer an intensive driving course?

Yes. The 40-hour intensive course costs £1,500, payable in full before the course begins. This represents a saving of £100 compared with booking the lessons individually.

Before booking, we will discuss your driving experience and agree whether an intensive course is suitable for you. You are responsible for booking your own practical driving test.

Lessons will normally be arranged during the two weeks leading up to your test. Beginning approximately three weeks beforehand is recommended, as this allows additional time to correct any minor weaknesses.

Your progress will be continually assessed. If you have not reached a safe test standard, you will not be permitted to use the J9 Driving car for your test. You may then choose to move your test to a later date, take it in your own suitable and correctly insured vehicle, or cancel it.

You must make any changes to your test booking yourself. DVSA currently requires at least 10 full working days’ notice to change or cancel a car driving test without having to pay the test fee again.

Booking an intensive course does not guarantee that you will be ready for your test or that you will pass.

Intensive-course cancellations: If you cancel before any lessons have begun, 80% of the course fee will be refunded and J9 Driving will retain 20% to cover the booking and reserved lesson time. If you cancel after the course has begun, J9 Driving will retain a minimum of 50% of the total course fee. If the value of lessons already provided exceeds 50%, those lessons will be charged at the standard lesson rate and any remaining balance will be refunded.

If your practical driving test is cancelled or postponed, the intensive-course fee will not automatically be refunded, as the payment covers tuition time reserved for you and is separate from the DVSA test booking.

Where will I be picked up and dropped off?

Your pick-up and drop-off location will be agreed between you and J9 Driving before your lesson.

What must I provide before my first lesson?

You must present your valid provisional driving licence and provide J9 Driving with a current DVLA licence check code before your first lesson. This allows us to confirm your entitlement to drive and check for any endorsements or restrictions.

You will need your driving licence number, National Insurance number and the postcode shown on your licence to generate the code. Your National Insurance number does not need to be shared with J9 Driving.

How do I book a lesson?
